Enugu – Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Ukwu Leadership Foundation, (DULF), Dr. Daniel Ukwu, has called on Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Enugu State Executive Governor to hasten the completion of the Enugu International Conference Centre that has been abandoned for over 18 years.
In an interview with Blueprint, Ukwu said there was need to complete the structures started by the Chimaroke Nnamani administration which has been left to lie fallow over the years because of the socio- economic potential of the complex.Ukwu lamented that instead of completing the complex and putting it into effective use, subsequent administrations overlooked it, hence the call on the governor to rise to the occasion.
Ukwu, a retired banker and senior citizen pointed out that due to Enugu being the capital of the old Eastern Nigeria, when the project is completed, it would be a melting pot for all the easterners, not only for Enugu state alone. Ukwu also pointed out that when completed, the conference centre would be capable of yielding the much needed internally generated revenue (IGR), for the state among other things.
“This is a monumental edifice that was actually initiated by the former Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani but over the years, two regimes have passed but the edifice remained untouched and we are wondering what is happening.
“If the edifice is completed, it will bring income to the state and improve the Internally Generated Revenue, and not only generating income but it will also provide employment opportunities for the youth.“Enugu, being the former capital of the former Eastern Region needs this edifice because it will be a meeting point for all Igbos,” Ukwu states while urging Mbah not to neglect the project.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Commissioner for Arts and Culture, Dame Ugochi Madueke, has said that in no distant time, the Mbah-led administration would visit the complex with a view to completing it.Madueke said that other abandoned projects like Hotel Presidential, would equally receive government attention.”In the next six months, Hotel Presidential and the International Conference Centre could be completed,” she said.
