VIDEO: ENUGU NAVAL BASE TO ENHANCE SECURITY AND TRANSPORTATION IN THE S’EAST, N’CENTRAL – ADM OGALLA, CNS

Nsukka – The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ikechukwu Ogalla has stated that the establishment of a naval base at Ogurugu in Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State shall enhance security and transportation both in the South East and North Central regions of Nigeria.

Adm. Ogalla made the assertion on Thursday while inspecting facilities at Ogurugu River Port where he said the Navy was going to establish a naval base.

“It’s going to be as quickly as possible . We have seen the facilities left behind by the Federal Government which can form a starting point. We have seen the jetty, already built by NIWA which one of the most difficult aspect of establishing a naval base .

“So, I believe that what is largely remaining is the paper work, getting all the necessary approvals. Within a short time, we’ll be here with the assistance of the State Government

“Ogurugu used to be a port during the colonial era. With the situation in the country today, it’s important for our operations in the South East and also the North Central.

“Utilization of the port will also lessen pressure on our roads since it is better to transport goods through the waterways”

In his own remark, the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai re-emphasized the eagerness of the State Government to collaborate with the Navy in actualizing the establishment of the Ogurugu Naval Base.

” Governor Peter Mbah made it clear that we are going to give the Nigerian Navy and the Federal Government all the support they need.

“It’s in our interest to partner with them to set up a Naval base for the policing of our waterways.

“It is in our interest to work with the Navy and benefit from what they can do. Nothing stops them from setting up a Naval School here. They can also set up a Naval hospital here’
