Uyo: Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom has joined his voice to calls for resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Iyorcha Ayu.
Udom made the veiled disclosure this morning, 22nd September, 2022, while hosting a special edition of Sunrise Daily, Channels TV current affairs program, at the Akwa Ibom State Government House, Uyo in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state.
Udom largely focused on the outstanding achievements of his administration such as successfully floating Ibom Air, the first State Government initiated commercial airline. It is remarkable that Udom’s Akwa Ibom State has done what successive Nigerian Governments have been unable to do.
He also elaborated on his Government’s industrialization program aimed at positioning the state for an economy beyond oil despite the fact that Akwa Ibom has 31% of Nigeria’s oil and gas reserves. Such industries include the Syringe manufacturing company and the coconut virgin oil “refinery”.
However, when he was specifically asked about the continuing impasse in his party, the PDP and the withdrawal of the camp of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike from the PDP presidential campaign council, Udom initially tried to be diplomatic:
“Wike is my brother and it’s not right to openly discuss what we discussed inside the house as brothers”
However, when pointedly asked why he was not with Wike, as a brother, when the Rivers State Governor announced that he (and his camp) were withdrawing from the PDP presidential campaign council, he dropped the bombshell:
“Let me speak “codedly”. The Bible says that it is not all that is lawful that is expedient. Therefore, some unlawful things are expedient in the interest of peace”.
This was a veiled response to the stance of Alh. Atiku Abubakar, the PDP flag bearer, that asking the party’s National Chairman, Ayu, to resign is unconstitutional.
