OZIOKO, NSUKKA LGA MAYOR VISITS PROF IGWE, VICE CHANCELLOR, UNN, SEEKS DEEPER CORPORATE RELATIONSHIP
Nsukka: The Executive Chairman, Nsukka LGA, Enugu State, Hon. Dr. Barr. Walter Ozioko paid a courtesy visit on the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof Charles Igwe, over the weekend.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Hon Ejike Okpe, Head, Media, Nsukka LGA, Enugu State.
According to the Mayor of Nsukka Municipality, the host Local Government Council of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria’s first full fledged University, he came on the visit so as to deepen corporate relationship existing between the council and the university.
Furthermore, Barr. Ozioko stated that he was deeply concerned about the fate of the Nsukka Youth and was therefore at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to seek for collaboration with the institution in the areas of youth empowerment, employment, admissions, etc.
However, another key issue in the result-oriented and robust discussions was the issue of waning artisanship culture in, not just Nsukka LGA, but also across Igbo-Land.
Decrying that ugly trend in its totality, Barr Ozioko prayed the University to evolve a feasible action plan for collaboration between the Local Government council and the University’s relevant departments with a view to revamping the artisanship culture in Nsukka LGA.
The Secretary of the LGA, Hon. Barr. Felix Asadu, who accompanied the Mayor on the visit, while re-emphasizing the need to expedite action in bringing back the artisanship culture, bemoaned the current situation wherein at every need of the most basic artisan, such as, tiler, mason, carpenter, etc, one has to cross either River Niger or River Benue, to get good hands.
Underlining the relevance of artisanship in societal development and youth employment, he joined his boss, the People’s Mayor, in seeking collaboration with the institution in that regard.
Responding, Prof Charles Igwe, the Vice Chancellor of UNN, promised a most cordial relationship between his person, office and Nsukka LGA.
To add life to his assurances, he proposed that both the University and the LGA should form a joint committee that will oversee the establishment of healthy working relationship between the two corporate entities.And to make assurances doubly sure, he went on to appoint Prof Ugwu, one of the institution’s DVCs, as Head of the University’s own committee, urging the leadership of Nsukka LGA to do same pronto.
On the Mayor’s entourage were other principal officers of the Council, such as, Hon. Sylvanus Asogwa, his Vice Chairman; Rt. Hon. Juliana Ugwu, his Supervisor for Finance; Hon. Damian Eze, his Supervisor for Health and Hon. Chinenye Arua, his Supervisor for Education.
Others were, Hon. Christiantus Ezea, SPA on Environment and Dr. Saint Ngwoke, Executive Secretary, Scholarship Matters, to mention but a few.Accompanying the VC to receive the People’s Mayor and team were, the DVC, the institutions Registrar, its Dean of Student Affairs, the Librarian, the PRO, etc.
The interest of Hon. Dr. Barr. Walter Ozioko’s administration in the youth constituency is outstandingly immense and that fact is clearly depicted in the caliber of his appointees so far.
