Onitsha – Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, has criticized the Anambra State Government’s policy of approving traditional leaders in the state for bestowing chieftaincy titles on particular people.
Achebe was especially upset by the suspension of the traditional leader of Neni in the state’s Anaocha Local Government Area, Gwe Damian O. Ezeani, who had just given Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra South a chieftaincy title.
The traditional ruler of Neni was suspended last week by the Anambra State Government, acting through Tony Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs.
Achebe, the chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, responded to the suspension by saying that the state government need to respect the traditional institution in a news release on Wednesday.
Achebe lamented the length of time the state administration took to suspend Ezeani in the 14-point letter.
The monarch signed the letter on behalf of the traditional rulers of Anambra State, titled “Notification for the suspension of HRH lgwe Damian O. Ezeani, the Traditional Ruler of Neni.”It said, “I am writing in regard to your letter to me dated January 8, 2024, with reference number MLGCCA/HC/2022/T/025/001/103, of the above description. The complete background of further events surrounding the suspension of H.R.H. lgwe Damian O. Ezeani, the traditional king of Neni, is also given in this response. I received your letter in person in Onitsha on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at 6:55 p.m.”
