NDUKA EYA @85:ANYA NDIGBO CELEBRATES ONE OF THEIR OWN, AN ARCHETYPAL IGBO ICON

Enugu – On Monday, 4th September, 2023, Igbo Leaders under the auspices of Anya Ndigbo, a non-partisan, socio-political and economic development-oriented organization, were at the Independence Layout, Enugu residence of Chief Nduka Eya, to felicitate with him on his 85th birthday.

At the occasion, members of Anya Ndigbo, led by their President, Engr Chris Okoye, FNSE, FAEngr, took turns to eulogize the octogenarian who is renowned for his stoic honesty and lifelong dedication to moral rectitude and service to humanity, at all times.

In his opening remark, Engr Okoye asserted that Anya Ndigbo had come to felicitate with an accomplished Igbo icon and patriot, who had an unblemished track record of service to the Igbo Nation,

” We are here to felicitate with and celebrate one of the few Igbo men who has remained a shining light and a role model.

“This is very important at such a trying time like this in the life of Ndigbo, so that we may, through the light shown by people like you, find our way.

“So at this your 85th birthday, Anya Ndigbo decided to reflect on and as well appreciate your service to Ndigbo and as well to Nigeria”.

He equally poured encomiums on the celebrant’s wife, Prof Regina Eya, a retired professor of Psychology from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Enugu, for being a ” supportive and dependable spouse”.

Eya, who hails from Imufu, Enugu-Ezike , Igbo-Eze North LGA of Enugu State served meritoriously in various offices including Secretary General Ohanaeze Ndígbo, commissioner for Education, old Anambra State, Resident Electoral Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ekiti State, etc.

Other members of the Anya Ndigbo delegation include Dr Joe Nwaorgu, Prof Elo Amucheazi, Prof Bonny Okere and Mazi Ikechukwu Bismarck Oji, MNSE, COREN.

In his speech , Prof Amucheazi, a retired professor of Political Science from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) went down memory lane, recalling fond memories of Eya, who he described as an “age mate and a worthy Igbo son”.

“Nduka Eya was at Nsukka (UNN) while I was at UCI (University College Ibadan). All his life, he has always stood for truth and justice”.

Prof Okere, a retired professor of Law from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus was equally full of praises for the celebrant while narrating his outstanding qualities

“He was a Road Safety Special marshall per excellence. In fact, he was doing the self appointed job of traffic control after mass at Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, even before the establishment of the Federal Road Safety Corps”.

Highlight of the event was the cutting of the birthday cake by Eya, who goes by the traditional title of Egbe evu mbe, with his wife beside him and sorrounded by his colleagues from Anya Ndigbo.
