Igbo Lawyers Association South Africa, ILASA, the umbrella body of Igbo lawyers practicing in South Africa, ahead of Saturday’s presidential election has endorsed the Labour Party, LP ticket of Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, 21st February, 2023 signed by Attorney Ugochukwu Anyiam and Advocate Rufus F. Onovo, the group’s chairperson and secretary respectively.
The statement read thus:
“RE: ILASA PRESS RELEASE // 2023 NIGERIA GENERAL ELECTIONS
IGBO LAWYERS ASSOCIATION SOUTH AFRICA (ILASA) ENJOINS NIGERIANS TO VOTE FOR LABOUR PARTY EN-MASSE
The umbrella body of practising Igbo lawyers in South Africa, “Igbo Lawyers Association South Africa (ILASA)”, has called on Nigerians to come out en-masse in the forthcoming General elections on 25th February 2023 and cast their votes for the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi (ObiDatti).
The Chairperson of the Association, Attorney Ugo Johnson Anyiam, initiated the call during its monthly meeting that was held on Saturday, 11th February 2023.
Making the call, the members of the Association joined the Chairperson to lament on the level of economic hardship and insecurity that are ravaging the entire country hence the urgent need for a change from the old order. “It is lamentable that despite the richness in both human and economic resources, Nigeria has become a laughing stock within itself and in the comity of nations”, the Chairperson frustratingly opined.
After a careful assessment of all the major front runners in the coming Polls, the members of the Association agreed, unanimously so, that Peter Obi and his Labour Party is the only Party that has a well defined Economic blue-print that could rescue the country from its current abyss.
ILASA is admonishing every diasporan to reach out to his or her family members and friends back home to come out without fear of molestation and cast their votes for the Labour Party and its presidential hopeful, while echoing the slogan that “Nigeria will be great again”
The association reiterated the belief that tribe and religion will no longer play a part in who governs Nigeria since it is a multi -ethno-religious society.”
