GOVERNOR UGWUANYI STOPS BUILDING OF FUEL STATION IN DENSELY POPULATED OBIAGU, ENUGU AS CLO BLAMES ECTDA FOR ALLOWING IT
Enugu:The Executive Governor of Enugu State, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi ordered the stoppage of work at the site of a fuel station currently under construction in Obiagu, a densely populated suburb of Enugu metropolis, today, Wednesday, the 24th of March, 2021.
However, this comes just after the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), Enugu State issued a statement absolving the Governor and blaming the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) for apparently consenting to the project.
In a statement signed by Comrade Kindness Jonah, the CLO State Program Officer, on Tuesday, the human rights organization questioned the rationale behind ECTDA “authorizing the siting of a petrol station at the epicenter of Obiagu, Ogui Urban Area”.
The statement read in parts :”How can one rationalize the enormity of disregard to the lives of people because they can bulldoze their ways to the top to get what they want careless of the aftermath.
“Exuberance occasioned by we-are-on-top syndrome, is showcased here vividly . Do we continue to say that Enugu State is in the hands of God when lives are being disregarded by some others in authority in the ministries or parastatals outside the purview of the Governor?
“Certainly , His Excellency , the Executive Governor of Enugu State , cannot be said to be in the know of such an aberrant abnormality and keep quiet, judging from his prismatic contour of performance.
“ECTDA we know, has been at the vanguard of destroying known properties which presumably are not in tandem with established building Regulations. ECTDA pulls down such allegedly illegal structures within the shortest notice, at times even a day’s notice.
“Therefore, this absurdity of constructing a volatile facility – a petrol station in the midst of a heavily built and highly densely populated area like Obiagu , which is a squalor zone where houses are not planned , and no visible layouts.
True to their statement that he was unaware that work was still ongoing on the fuel station site, contrary to to his order last December, the Governor swung into action today, in the public interest.
