Enugu: The Enugu State Coordinator, National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Sam Ujogu, says the NYSC has received a total of 647 graduates posted to the state for the 2023 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 Orientation.
Ujogu gave the number during the swearing-in of the corps members, on Friday in Enugu.
He said the orientation course for the 2023 Batch ‘A’ stream 1 of corps members commenced on Jan 25.
“The Orientation course for this Batch of corps members commenced two days ago. At the closing of registration midnight yesterday, a total of 647 Corps members were registered comprising 350 males and 297 females,” he said.
The state coordinator appealed to the Enugu State Government for the upgrading of the facilities in the camp and provision of operational vehicles to facilitate inspection of Corps members.
According to Ujogu, some of the structures in the camp are dilapidated and required urgent renovation.
He said that NYSC was still very hopeful that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi would approve funds to complete the stated projects and other requests.
He thanked the Awgu Local Government Chairman, Mr Pedro Nwankwo, who had been constant in giving the NYSC logistics support at every orientation course.
He urged the corps members to pay attention to the skills acquisition training which had been reinvigorated by the management of the scheme.
He added that the scheme was to create opportunities for them to acquire vocational skills during the service year so as to enable them contribute meaningfully to national development and as well to become self reliance.
Declaring the orientation course open, Gov. Ugwuanyi said he was committed to providing the enabling environment to keep the scheme viable and to ensure the safety and welfare of corps members deployed to the state.
Ugwuanyi, represented by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Manfred Nzekwe, urged the corps members to make the best of the NYSC opportunity and become important parts of the history of the laudable programme.
Earlier, the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, represented by Justice A. O. Onovo, administered oath of service on the Corp members.
Ozoemena advised the Corps members to always strive to move in the proper direction.
He said that the oath taken by the Corps members showed that they had been properly admitted into NYSC scheme.
“You have just come out of various institutions of higher learning; your targets should always be higher and not backward,” he urged.
