ELECTORAL ACT AMENDMENT: HOUSE OF REPS NEVER INVITED INEC – DAZANG

Abuja* : The INEC Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Mr Nick Dazang has stated emphatically that the commission was never invited by the House of Representatives to appear before it, before the controversial passing of the amendment of the Electoral Act.
Mr. Dazang made the assertion on Friday morning while speaking as a guest on Kakaaki, AIT’s current affairs program.

According to Mr Dazang, “INEC was never formally invited by the House of Representatives. We only heard of the invitation on TV”.
Mr. Dazang also explained that INEC was surprised at the volte face of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)

“We are bewildered (with NCC’s) action. These are patriots that we worked with. We have documented evidence of NCC’s position. NCC has provided such services for other Government agencies like JAMB and FIRS.”

He also stated that MTN and Airtel have assured INEC that they can provide Network coverage for almost hundred percent of the country.
Mr Dazang further stated that electronic transmission of results would not only be more transparent but cheaper.

He also explained that INEC cannot implement electronic transmission of results without such being provided for in the Electoral Act Amendment. He however urged members of the National Assembly to act as statesmen, not politicians by ensuring that electronic transmission was included in the Electoral Act Amendment, in line with the wishes of most Nigerians.
