Enugu – Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, is back in Nigeria.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was sentenced to prison alongside her husband and a medical doctor under highly controversial circumstances involving an organ donor for their daughter Sonia, who suffers from kidney issues.
While Ekweremadu received a sentence of 9 years and 8 months from Justice Jeremy Johnson at the Old Bailey, his wife was handed a 4-year and 6-month term, while their intermediary, Dr. Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The Ekweremadus and Obeta were convicted of conspiracy to arrange for a young man, identified as David Nwamini, to travel to Britain, where he was to be allegedly exploited for his kidney, needed for their ailing daughter, Sonia.
After a six-week trial and conviction at London’s Central Criminal Court, the Ekweremadus and their doctor were found guilty of violating the Modern Slavery Act on May 5, 2023.
A family source, however, confirmed on Wednesday that Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived in Abuja on Tuesday evening.
The news of her return was celebrated by many in their home state, Enugu and particularly their hometown of Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area.
They expressed the hope that her husband would be set free to reunite with his family and associates in Nigeria without further delay.
