EKWEREMADU THANKS NDI NENWE FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT AS ST PETER’S NENWE CELEBRATES CENTENARY
Enugu: Senator Prof Ike Ekweremadu, CFR, PhD on Saturday, 26th June, 2021, thanked Ndi Nenwe for their continued support to him, politically, over the years.
The three time Deputy President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria and former Speaker, ECOWAS parliament made the remark during the centenary celebration of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nenwe. Equally, the celebration marked hundred years of Catholicism in Nenwe.
“I thank ndi Nenwe for their continued support to me, politically, over the years. In 1996, when I contested for Chairmanship of Aninri LGA, you supported me. In 2003, when I went to the Senate, you supported me. In 2007, you supported my return to the Senate. In 2011, you sent me back to the Senate. In 2015, you sent me back to the Senate. In 2019, yet again, you returned me to the Senate with your votes.
” The Parish priest told me of this event when I was here two weeks ago for the funeral mass of our brother, Late Chief David Mba”
Ekweremadu promised to provide potable water at the church through a motorised borehole.
In his own remark, the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and Member representating Awgu/Aninri /Oji River Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon Toby Okechukwu commended Ndi Nenwe for keeping the faith,
“As you mark a hundred years of Catholicism in Nenwe, I commend you for keeping the faith.
“We shall continue to do our best to serve you better by ensuring effective representation”
Highlights of the occassion include the conferment of meritorious Awards on some distinguished personalities for their support to the church.
In his remark, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Kennedy Udeh explained that the Centenary celebration was supposed to hold in 2019 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also thanked Senator Ekweremadu for his love and support for the Parish and Ndi Nenwe.
Some of the award recipients include Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Rt. Hon Toby Okechukwu, Rt. Hon. Oguerinwa Amadi, member representing Udi/Ezeagu in the House of Representatives, Hon Ezekiel Chukwu, Chairman, Aninri LGA and Hon. Engr Chinedu Okwu, Member representing Aninri State constituency in Enugu State House of Assembly.
Posthumous Awards were also presented to the families of some dignitaries who played key role in the hundred years history of the Catholic Church in Nenwe.
Some of them include Late Chief Oluoha Joku(Onuora Njoku), the 2nd Nenwe Warrant Chief, who brought Catholicism to Nenwe in 1919, Late Senator M. B Chukwubike, who represented Awgu/Udi/Awka Divisions in the 1st Republic, Late Chief Michael Madukaeku Oji, a frontline academician and a self made disciplinarian, who rose through the ranks from a Primary School Teacher to a Secondary School Principal, ultimately serving as Head, General Studies Department, Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State.
