Enugu: The Chairman, College of the Immaculate Conception Old Boys Association, Enugu Branch, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo has urged students to choose careers that they have passion for by “making people pay for what they enjoy doing”
Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo, an investment expert and a Former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Enugu State gave this advice on Wednesday while speaking to final year students of the College of the Immaculate Conception (CIC), Uwani, Enugu during the annual sensitization Workshop organized by CICOBA, Enugu Branch.
“In life, if you make a career from doing the things you like doing, the things you have passion for, you will succeed without putting yourself under pressure.
“Make people to pay for what you like doing. If you love playing football, make a career out it and you will excel naturally. If you are also a talented musician, pursue a career in Music.
“Dont be under any pressure to do it because another person is doing it. For instance, Frank, my friend and classmate from Primary School; we were both good in Fine Art. I eventually read Law but he continued in Fine Art. He could have been a lawyer too but he chose to continue with Fine Arts (as a career). Today, he is one of most succesful businessmen in Enugu. Every one here knows of Waterrock Industries, thats him”
Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo also advised the students to accomodate their parents opinion while choosing a career, even if means getting back to the career they are passionate about afterwards.
“You can read Law, Medicine or any course in line with your parents advice and still go on to pursue a career in a field you enjoy. For instance, Jideofor Ezeofor, my class mate in CIC read Law, he and his brother but today they run a very famous Tailoring outfit, Zeof”
In his own speech, Rt. Hon Chuka Eneh, the immediate past Chairman of CICOBA, Enugu Branch and member representing Udi South Constituency commended the Principal and staff of the school for their efforts in nurturing the outgoing students.
“I commend the Principal, the teachers and other members of Staff of CIC, Enugu for their tremendous efforts in nurturing the outgoing students and other students too.
“I urge the outgoing students to be good ambassadors of CIC by making good use of all they learn here today”
In his speech, Rev. Fr. Hilary Mgbodile extolled the virtues of the old boys for making a tremendous positive impact on the school:
“One of the things I have to realize is the pivotal role of the old boys in succesfully piloting the affairs of this school”.
He went on to commend the old boys for the various projects they have executed in the school including the Multi Purpose Building (MPB), the venue of the Program, Ultra modern students hostel and the ongoing construction of the Multi Purpose Sports Complex(MSC).
He also urged the students to “stand on the shoulders of giants” by emulating the accomplished old boys who came to interact with them and to mentor them.
There was also an interactive session during which the old boys entertained questions from the students.
Finally, in line with tradition, the Chairman and other old boys served the students with refreshment.
