BARTH NNAJI JOINS ENUGU 2023 RACE, RAISING THE STAKES

Enugu 2023 Governorship campaign posters of Prof Bartholomew Okechukwu Nnaji have surfaced online further confirming speculations that the 65 year old world renowned engineer and inventor is interested in occupying Enugu Lion Building, come May 29th, 2023.

Nnaji, who was Minister of Power under President Jonathan from July 2011 to August, 2012, is not new to the Enugu Governorship terrain having been a Gubernatorial aspirant of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003.

Surprisingly, the campaign posters bore the logo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) although Nnaji is not known presently to be an active member of any political party, having devoted his time, recently, to South East Regional integration which he is championing under the South East Regional Development Company (SEREDEC).

Recently, Prof Nnaji has also been active in the “Ka Nkanu East Jee” Campaign, geared towards ensuring that the next Enugu State Governor comes from, not just Enugu East Senatorial District but specifically from Nkanu East LGA, which they allege to be the most marginalized and under developed LGA in Enugu State.

Certainly, the entrance of Nnaji, who was appointed as ALCOA Foundation Distinguished Professor of Engineering by the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1996, into the race raises the stakes based on his intimidating resume.

However, the jury is still out on the issue of his having the political structure and sagacity to successfully prosecute a Governorship Election in Enugu State, based on the emergence of other top contenders such as Senator Ike Ekweremadu, CFR, PhD, three-time Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, a former Accountant General of Enugu State and former Federal Permanent Secretary, among others.
