ARMED ROBBERS GUN DOWN SEVERAL POLICEMEN DURING NEW HAVEN SUPERMARKET ATTACK
Enugu: A yet to be confirmed number of policemen lost their lives yesterday when they were cut down by the bullets daredevil armed robbers in the New Haven neighborhood of Enugu, Enugu State.
According to witnesses, the policemen were driving past Frank Supermarket along the popular commercial district of Chime Avenue, New Haven which was under the Armed robbers’ attack.
On sighting them, the robbers immediately opened fire gunning down about several of them. Some accounts give the number of the victims of the gun attack as three, others as four or even five.
The incident which occurred around 9.45 pm lead to stampede as everyone scampered for safety to avoid the bullets sprayed recklessly by the hoodlums.
A police van came to carry the bodies of three of the deceased men, not knowing that two others were lying inside the gutter. They however came back to carry them as well.
In recent months, there has been an upsurge of violent crimes and armed robbery in New Haven, the Centre of nightlife in Enugu-the coal city, with several supermarkets and other businesses having been robbed on several occasions.
Also, about three weeks ago, a popular barbing salon located at Imperial Bus stop, opposite White Leaf Hotel, Upper Chime Avenue, New Haven was attacked by two hoodlums, who robbed everyone present of their monies, handsets and other valuables.
That incident happened around 9pm.
Again, about six weeks ago, several shops and businesses at Ugbo Okonkwo, by New Haven Last bus stop were robbed in broad daylight.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Daniel Ndukwe was still to respond to a text message sent to him, regarding this latest incident, as at the time of this report.
