ENUGU 2023: STOP DELVING INTO THE MURKY WATERS OF POLITICS- OHANAEZE YOUTH COUNCIL WORLDWIDE WARNS OHANAEZE ENUGU STATE CHAPTER

The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has cautioned the Enugu State chapter of the group to stop delving into the murky waters of politics.

This was in apparent reaction to the Ohanaeze, Enugu State chapter’s recent partizan activities on the zoning of political positions.

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said Ohanaeze should support the aspiration of every Igbo man and not take sides.

Okwu said in the statement that the issue of zoning should not be a yardstick to stop any Igbo man from seeking any elective position at the promotion of other candidates.

He said, “We have noted with deep concern the attempt by the Ohanaeze in Enugu State to frustrate the political ambition of some Igbo men and women in the State, based on the flimsy excuse of zoning.

“It is so bizarre that Ohanaeze, an apolitical group, could go as far as some asking bonafide Ndigbo not to run for an election merely because of a controversial zoning arrangement.

“We want to make it clear that Ohanaeze belongs to all Igbo men and women and would never be a party to killing the ambition of any one of them.

“We made this declaration based on our findings, to such an extent that the proponents of the said zoning are not total in their stand.

“To start with, a former Governor Sullivan Chime has insisted there was no formal agreement and some persons are still fabricating documents because of their selfish interest. A zoning arrangement where the two brothers moved and seconded a motion?

“They are shouting zoning but at the same time they have all bought nomination forms to run for one position or the other against the same zoning principles they were talking about. He that comes to equity must come with clean hands.

“If they say there is zoning, we believe it should not be haphazard but total. For instance, it should trickle down to the State Assembly, House of Representatives, the Senate and then Governorship.

“A case in point is that of Senatorial elections where they have not observed any form of respect for zoning. In Enugu North Senatorial zone for instance, Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South is supposed to produce the next Senator for the zone, but the so-called zoning proponents have jettisoned zoning and gone ahead to purchase forms for the election. It is the same thing with Enugu West, where a major proponent of zoning from Ezeagu, UDI, Awgu/Oji River/Aninri has gone ahead to pick senatorial form.

“So, who is fooling who in all of these?” Okwu queried.

He said every interested Igbo politician should be allowed to vie for any position of their choice, stressing that “Ohanaeze should not constitute itself as a dream killer, rather it should play the role of a father, which it is.”
